To add a point or two, with Windows, you can only run steppers, because
you can't schedule interrupts to service servo amps and linear encoders.

Linux with the RT patch allows this. It's not for everybody yet. Because it
has been primarily user supported, programmers have worked on the parts
they needed or wanted, whihc has included only minimally the installation.
Firms like Red Hat and Corel are learning that they can sell more copies
if they pay someone to develop these utilities. Things will get better.

There is a very real possibility that Linux will be a standard of
the future. It is powerful like W98 and NT, yet retains the stability and
"programmer" friendliness of DOS. Linux is a programmer's OS and thus not
very end-user friendly. W98 and NT are end user oriented and as such are
not programmer friendly. Eventually, developers will come up with the cute
and fuzzy front end to make Linux tolerable to the masses. Then someone
will hide Linux within the front end and tell us it is not linux but an
entirely new OS (sound familiar?). It will then be as slow and unstable as
W98/NT.

The problem is not with getting access to the printer port. It is
the clock chip that we need access to, and no version of windows fully
allows this. Perhaps EMC would be less of a pain if it were written for
DOS, but then it would not be as popular. After all, who wants to be seen
dating fat girls or using DOS?

All cynical jokes aside, one should remember that EMC, like Linux,
is still experimental technology. If you like being on the cutting edge of
technology (and occasionally cutting yourself on it) then EMC/Linux is
fascinating. If you want simplicity then you should stick with Ahha or
CNCPro or some equivalent. Just remember that all of these programs have
bugs in them as well.
