Just one thing which hasn't been said - you are more likely to do yourself
harm with AC voltage - that's how Mr. Westinghouse became famous - pretty
much tricked into supplying the power for the first electric chair. The
shock our friend felt when he got hold of his stepper motor leads was
effectively AC not DC - i.e. it was chopped DC not continuous. AC will break
down the skin's resistance much easier than DC and that is why it is more
dangerous. You can get a pretty good belt off a telephone wire - 24 volts at
19Hz ringing current but you'll feel nothing if you grab the terminals of a
couple of lorry batteries..
