I spent a lot of time and money looking for the 'silver bullet' of CAD
software. I bought genericCAD, Bobcad, Vector, and TurboCAD. I also
tried free copies of several others.
I finally decided the right solution was to pick one and learn it well.
You could probably pick any program and eventually learn to use it- even
something as obtuse as Vector. Bu they all have a lot to learn before
you can use it well.
I decided to stick with TurboCAD for a couple reasons- it is clearly
capable of very fine results- look at some of the renderings on their
web site, and some of the user forums. It supports all the latest 3D
features.
But most important to me I can afford to track its updates. All CAD
software (unless its a dead unsupported package) will have frequent
updates. Once registered TurboCAD will be sure to inform you of the
latest update :-) and they always have a deal. I have spent $50 to $150
for various upgrades over the years.
You are going to invest a LOT of effort into learning a CAD package. Be
sure its one you can afford to stay current with.
