I have been thinking about an optical mouse based DRO for my
mini–mill. So far it has not advanced beyond the prototype board, but
for what it is worth here are some thoughts. I looked only at optical
PS2 mice.
Resolution: Best I found 800 CPI (+- 0.00125 in )
Interface to PC : RS32 via a AWC Electronics chip or board

The AWC site has some example programs for there hardware.
For my mill I only have to measure about 10 in x 6 in and I envisioned
a table extension and a spring loaded mouse sensor operating inverted
under the extension with chip and coolant protection.
