It's a good idea.

I always say when cutting heavy cable it would be much easier with a mine
shaft to lower it down.

now for my daftess idea yet.

Get a length of clear plastic tubing of 100ft in length, attach a
vacuum cleaner to one end and a photo-sensor at the required length,
feed cord out until beam is broken, cut cord and allow to shoot along
with airflow into a trap where it can be collected.

Of course you need room for something 100ft long :)
