The point was to have a way to measure the thickness at any point along the
length. If the roller is a known diameter and you use that dimension in
your length calculations, you are using an estimate of the amount of
collapse of the cordage. By trapping the cordage between two rollers and
measuring the collapse (increase/decrease of the center distance), the
travel amount would be more correct that using an estimate.

Nice thought; but I'm not sure if it will apply here.

The thickness of a braided shoelace or other braided "hollow"
flat "cordage" doesnt necessarily get thicker when the angle of its
weave changes normal to the direction of its length.

Think Chinese finger puzzle. You can pull it longer or shorter, but
if crushed flat it will still be the same thickness... (The change
to accomodate the length variable occurs in width.)
