I'll second the motion for double back tape. Works great for thin, flexible
sheets. You can also use it for holding non-ferrous materials on a surface
grinder.
I cut lots of patterns from thin sheets - mostly .125" aluminum. If your
machine is capable of holding Z accuracy of .001" you will find it easiest
to cut to within .002-.005" of the lower surface which leaves a paper thin
membrane holding the piece in place. We do this with nearly all flat sheet
parts - even stainless and tool steel. It's less messy than tape and the
parts just pop out. The flash left attached can be removed with a deburring
tool. Be careful! Its sharp as a razor.
