when you ask about the average time investment
to get an emc/linux system going what is your
criteria?

1. virgin system with ms windows installed.
2. linux system without rt patches or emc installed.
3. linux system with rt patches but without emc installed.

also what platform?

intel
sparc
mips
powerpc
m68k
alpha
etc.

are you asking about a minimal system?
are you asking about a maximum system?
running x windows not running x windows?

there is no way to answer your question without
knowning more about your criteria.
