I went through the same thing recently. Tried three different floppy
drives. Final result was to change power supplies. Floppy drives seem
to be more sensitive to PSU's than CDROM or hard drives. The symptoms
were almost exactly the same. Booted and ran Linux (quite well, too)
from hard drive, sometimes booted from CDROM, never floppy.
