I was surprised that you fiddled with EMC at all when you have put so
much effort into your own system. What was it you expected to get from
the EMC?
Tom Yager wrote an interesting comment in InfoWorld July 15 02 in a
sidebar to an article titled, "Intel touts RISC alternative."
"There are two wild cards in this game: Linux and AMD. Intel wisely
courted Linux as an early software partner. Whereas Windows ISVs balk at
reworking their 32-bit code for Itanium, most Linux applications need
little tuning to run on the new hardware. Linux is already established
on 64-bit platforms, and developers have long avoided the pitfalls that
cause ported applications to break. The respectability of a commercial
Unix, coupled with Linux's vast software library and brilliant developer
community, gives Itanium 2 a strong software presence out of the gate."
I guess one advantage of the EMC is the fact that it has been ported to a
number of machines and is available for anyone to modify by porting to
new machines as they come along.
