The first time I tried I wasted a couple of weeks - then I discovered that
the old cheapo motherboard I was using wouldn't support the RT part. I
changed to a different motherboard and was up and running in less than an
hour. I have since installed it on another machine and again it took less
than an hour from start to finish. In both cases the machines are also
running Windows '95 and I've had no problems with conflicts between the two.
I can draw in a CAD programme and then convert to G-code in Windows, then go
into Linux and open the G-code file into EMC and squirt it out to the
parallel port. Linux certainly feels much better and more solid than Windows
and is continually developing and getting more software available for ti.
The big advantage, of course, is that it will run machines in Real Time and
so you can be confident that, if you wish to cut at 5ft per minute, under
linux you will do so whereas, under windows, half the cut might only be at
4ft per minute as windows has decided, independently of you, to go away and
clean up the mess of files it has smeared across your hard drive! Often this
won't matter but, when that job comes along that needs a good surface finish
to the cut.......
