A few years ago I ran a 16x40 5HP lathe off of a commercial 10HP
rotary phase converter. I wasn't familiar with VFD's then. Besides
costing more than VFD's they are noisy. I hated the noise and
considered building an enclosed ventilated cabinet for it. The
voltage on one leg was higher than the other two. I sold the lathe a
couple years ago and kept the converter just in case... But from
what I've learned about VFD's on this and other lists since then I
would definitely go with a VFD next time.
