Hi:
Many have expressed exasperation with or outright intolerance of the
idler motor fan noise usually experienced with rotary converters.
It wasn't until some time after I built my first such converter that I
got around to fitting a fan, for the simple reason that the motor didn't
have one. I finally gave in when I noticed that after some hours of simple
idling the motor got warmer than I liked.
So, off to a local motor rewinder for a fan and home with a cheap
plastic one which at 3600 RPM made enough noise to awaken the dead.
I have now quieted said fan by reducing both its blade length and height
to about one half their original size. This by the simple, if perilous
expedient of sawing them off with the table saw.
That done I mounted the fan on a piece of bar chucked in the wood lathe
and with a VERY coarse, flexible, abrasive disk in the mini angle grinder
cleaned up all dimensions to run true.
Deburred and installed the fan now moves just enough air at noise levels
that are perfectly tolerable, even a few as three feet away.
Note that if you the CURE for single-to-three phase conversion and have
the money to spend, one can be found here:
http://www.phaseperfect.com/
where an interesting tech bull can be downloaded in PDF from here:

while an operating and instruction manual can be had right here:
