has anybody used a garage door opener to drive an axis?

I would like to make a big cutting table. I have quite a few
garage door openers. One is a Genie that has a half inch
acme (?) thread, 8 turns to the inch, It is 8 feet long in a nice
aluminum extrusion for support. For a plasma cutter, it looks
like it could drive the gantry from a center overhead position.
The z axis doesn't seem to need much travel for a cutter. There
would be no cutting pressure on the gantry.
