If you buy new the prices are eye-watering. However there are some good
deals to be had on eBay. Another cheap alternative is the Surplus center
treadmill motors. They aren't as good quality as proper servos but I am
very pleased with mine. They work out at $43 per axis including encoders
but excluding carriage. The only real problem is that they need to be
geared at least 2.5:1 to work properly.

Gecko servo and stepper drives are the same price.
