There pics of my machine at "CNC-pics" group at yahoo under rogermach. The mounts on that machine are not the ones I'm prototyping, they will be replaced with the new ones. The Z drive in the pics is basically the same. Ebay is a good place to find surplus servos. A few people here have had good luck with treadmill motors from surplus center as servos. Any DC brush type motor will make a servo with the addition of an encoder. Geckos will only control DC brush type servos.
I used Allen Bradley 40 lb-in 100 volt servos on all three axies. Gecko G320's , E5S-200 US digital encoders, Mach2 software, Bob Campbells Sound logic breakout board.

Ron,
I would appreciate the picture. I'm still trying to put it all
together.
What servo's, drivers, controller did you use? I don't know enough yet
about the electronics to begin to decide what to buy (or where to buy)
Thank you
George

My Z axis is on the spindle and takes very little force . It is running
an 840 oz/in geared about 1.5 to 1 on a ball screw .
I can get you a picture of the Z drive if you want it ?
The knee on this mill takes a gorilla to crank , as the table must weigh
about 1,000 pounds , it is 30'" X54" & over an inch thick .
