Hi Alan,
You can use a cheap drill speed control or light dimmer type circuit.
The router is probably rated as AC only because DC would quickly destroy
the on/off switch due to arcing.
It is better to get one with built in speed control because they usually
have speed governors so the speed doesn't drop on load. If you use a
simple external controller the speed will drop quite a lot on load.
