Assuming the newer router did not have an on-board speed controller,
and assuming it was a simple 2 wire plug, would both field and
armature wires be brought out to the plug ? or would there be some
other circuitry inside ?

I'm thinking of the capacitor start motors (yes, I know these are not
cap start) where there is a little extra inside the motor that does
other functions than just let the motor see wall power all the time.
