The easiest way to do it is to sort of ray trace along a given row,
everytime you cross a boundary you go from outside a solid to inside
or visa versa. The first thing you hit must be the outside of
something so you just alternate from there. Before you do that you
convert the vertex list into a set of contours although you should
only add the vertical lines as, this avoids the problem of going along
a contour and thinking you have gone through it.

This is actually easier than what I had to do to generate SLC files
from bmp's in that case I had to consider the nesting more fully as
in that case you can go from outside to inside a solid in two ways;
from outside a body to inside it and from inside a cavity to inside
the body.
