Tim, I don't know if I qualify as an expert. I've been doing drafting for only 10yrs. I'm sure there are others who are more qualified than I.
Tolerances were something that hurt ones pride for the first few years [still do from time to time :)]. Knowing what and where to put them.
From my experiance a properly toleranced drawing is the difference between a ok project and a winning product. On a simple part [this
T-nut for example] I'm sure the tolerances don't mean much [+/-0.001 or +/- 0.01 would have zero impact on the final parts application, other
than one is 10x harder to make than the other] but on a more industrial product it can make or break the entire thing.

Software has helped this greatly in recent years. W/ Solidworks and the tolerance checking modules, one can quickly see where tolerances
will stack up and 'catch you' when you least expect it. It's a very handy tool.

I also fall prey to making my own drawings and not tolerancing them to the level that they should be [when I'm building it myself anyway].
I think that is completly acceptable but it does have the 'catch 22' of coming back to bite when one picks up that same job a couple years
later and tries to make a duplicate. W/ out proper tolerances it can be a struggle to remember what you did last time to tweak or make
things work.

Q/c'ing drawings is not my first love, it is very difficult to present areas needing improvement on a drawing w/out hurting the originators
feelings. Drawings [even in CAD form] are one step removed from art [ ok maybe CAD ones are 1.5 steps removed :) ]. So to have ones
drawing critigued can feel like a personal attack, which was never the intent. I've always tried to make it a fun excercise [add jokes to my notes to
lighten the impact] but it still is not my favorite job :)

However, that being said. It is an internal control that we use here to make sure that everything is built to a standard. [or in our dept's case
is drawn to a standard].

The guy who was my first boss[drawing approver] used to remind me about those Claritin commercials on TV.
" There is alot to be said for Clarity " it's kinda stuck :)

Best Regards

J. Johnson
