I went the other way. I started by making everything extrusions on top
of extrusions.
I like profiles when I may need different lengths of something. Making
configurations with different lengths is pretty easy.
One of the strengths of Solidworks is the ease of changes, especially if
your original design is made with future changes in mind.
In coming from Autocad, I had a hard time realizing how easy it was to
rough sketch and then add dimensions. Changing them is just as easy.
The other thing I love about Solidworks is on the fly calculations. In
Autocad, I always had a calculator at hand. In Solidworks, I just input
as an equation, like 14-12.7 to get 1.3
SW is also smart enough to do conversions on the fly. If I am making a
model in inches, I can input 17mm and it will convert it. Same with
fractions. Input 5 5/8 and it converts to 5.625.
