Hans,
I have been thinking about how to build a laminator on the cheap and the
line I am pursuing is to get the fuser unit from a laser printer or copier
and use that. All the fuser units I am familiar with have a halogen bulb
inside the heated roller to heat it up and then have thermistors external to
the roller to control the temperature. I plan to use a PIC microcontroller
to read the thermistor and switch the line voltage to the heater lamp on and
off via a solid state relay. Then the only thing left is driving the roller.
Many of the fusers even have an adjustment on the non-heated roller to
control the pressure.
I have a request in to our printer tech to save me the next fuser he
replaces that still heats and has a roller that is in fair shape.
