The heated roll it the tricky part. They have a metal roller, coated
with some insulating material, then
resistance wire is wound around it, and then it is covered by silicone
rubber. VERY tricky, I'd
hate to try to make one.

Why make when you can scavenge. You will find such a roller in just
about every copier and lazer printer. Its called the fuser assembly,
and its heating is what the "warming up" cycle on the copier is for.
