No, I believe that for a NEMA transformer to carry the label "step down
transformer"
it cannot be an autotransformer. Technically, apart from NEMA and NFPA
specifications for component labeling, you are right. This all applies ONLY
in the US, as I did state in my reply. I don't know if these units are
REQUIRED
to have a schematic drawing on the data plate, but all the ones made
after about
1970 seem to.
