Not necessarily. Most regulated supplies will not accept current back
from the load. Some have overvoltage crowbars that will short the
output when you eceed some setpoint above the nominal setting.
Shorting the output while the motor is in motion would cause a large
current and could damage the motor or the drive. But, other than the
crowbar, if current came back from the motor to the drive, the power
supply would not have a facility to dissipate that energy, and the
voltage at the drive would rise. Mariss has a drawing somewhere
on a circuit to dissipate overvoltages safely.
