Stepdown transformers may not be oddball, but they are no good to
you since the voltage is too high.

Ugly or not it will probably save you a bunch of cash and still work
fine. Commercial manufacturers purchase in large numbers and can
have specific transformers manufactured for them however they want
them. Your not in that situation so theres not much of an option
available. And besides, its not that uncommon to see multiple
transformers inside commercial equiptment.
