Sure, if it's got servos or even steppers belted up already thats the best way to go. Then it's just a matter of finding a suitable drive. Rutex has even made it possible to control large brushless servos now. Beyond the drives and the power supply, everyone is pretty much on the same page. PC, software and interface(s).
Mach3 is really evolving nicely. Now even supports PLC and HomannDesigns Modbus (ModIO), A serial interface that provides alot inputs and outputs. 2 analog for potentiometers for dials that control feedrate, spindlespeed, etc. on the fly. LCD characters output. Controlling CNC machines with toolchangers are very doable now.
