The most common question asked for small machine tool CNC kit- semi
manual usage, and disabling an axios.
For running with steppers without disconnecting them.
For running with steppers wihtou detent torque.

For using a single axis (indexing) out of machine control in 4+ axis setups.
For facing, turning a single plane (ie best possible powerfeed) with
cnc, while manually controlling depth of cut.
Fastest way to run when you need a non-specified depth of cut, like
planing a surface until it is flat. Unknown curvature, pits, etc.

What for the wire ? 3 bucks for wire does not matter at all.
A lot cheaper when you need 1 drive more, bigger than others, different
than others, etc..
A lot better when you need to remove detent torque.

Integrated solutions look good, and are convenient.
Most times they are not as good as they seem, at first.

Nothing against the G540 as such - good tech and good support.
Independent drives just are a betetr solution, thats all.
