There may be some situations where the part has internal voids (like
cooling passages in an engine block). The wax sections can be heated
lightly to make them stick together (or manually 'welded' together) and
then coated for investment casting. This is actually the way a number
of intricate objects are made commercially.

Another method is to make a master mold set from first machined pattern
sections. Rubber molds are frequently made for this purpose. The
pattern sections are molded separately, and then assembled fairly easily
for investment casting. So, here, only one set of patterns needs to be machined.
