Ask your school to check into "European" or "low-emission" grades.
Much lower VOC's(Volatile Organic Compounds) as the Europeans have
much more stringent environmental rules for this sort of thing.

P.S. Jesse's statement about it being less damaged by water should be
taken with a "grain of salt". 3/4 MDF is pressed from a 14 inch stack
of fiber and will swell quite nicely when exposed to water or water
vapor...
