First, there are other DOS systems besides MS-DOS. DR-DOS and FreeDOS are
two that come to mind. So, MicroSoft's pulling DOS off of the market doesn't
really disturb things.

Second, Do you run your CNC equipment from a dedicated computer, or from one
that's running your E-Mail, CAD program and others? If it's a dedicated
computer, why even worry about changing. If it's not a dedicated computer,
perhaps it's time to buy a small, used machine and dedicate it to CNC.

What I see happening is that the DOS based CNC Control developers will have
to start including a version of DOS with their product so that the end-user
doesn't have to search the web. Perhaps something like a BDI for DOS! I
think that, all too often, we get ourselves into a mode of upgrading each
time something "new" comes out on the market. In actuality, it's time to
upgrade only when the tools that we have no longer suit our purpose. My
daughter is using a 1956 vintage ShopSmith and a 1967 vintage table saw.
They work just as good (maybe even better) than the ones that are available
today.

After all, it's not our job to insure MicroSoft and Intel's profits. We can
better spend that money on metal (or plastic or whatever else you want to
machine) and the tooling to machine it!

|Sure, DOS will be able to be used for a long time but the market (like
|myself) certainly has found Windows apps. to be an advantage in many areas.
