Mr Sausage:
Although there are ways to avoid the problems associated with Windows based
real-time software, using DOS and the ubiquitous parallel port is a cheaper,
workable alternative. In a hobbiest environment, the rules of the game are
different. Many of us give lower cost a higher priority than state of the
art elegance.
Typically, you don't use the same computer to design the parts and also run
the machine tool, so you're not really mixing operating systems. The machine
computer can be an "obsolete, slow" machine compared to the one used for the
design. I'm using an old Zenith Z-Star EX. It's a 486DX2-50 with 8 MBytes of
memory. It's hardly suitable for running a windows based G-Code interpreter,
but it runs TurboCNC just fine. I'm trying to minimize my out of pocket
expenses. I assembled my own driver boards from kits and used a surplus
power supply to minimize the costs of the electronics.
I've found it quite interesting to search through the web and find the old
DOS based tools that I gave away years ago. Since computers are another of
my interests, I'm enjoying the software part almost as much as the
metalworking part. So, to answer your question of how I'd like to control my
CNC equipment, the DOS solution works just fine.

|Hello group,
|
|Although I'm completly new to PC based CNC, I am amazed this day and age
|people use a PC parallel port and software timing to control either
steppers
|(or what I call a 'stepper emulator' Geckos). I bought the deskwinnc card
|because it is a serial controlled device and, although I haven't even
|assembled my system yet, I'm hoping it will relieve me of this
|huge concern of PC Operating System.
|
|Perhaps it is becoming the time for a new USB or ethernet controller
|"standard"?
|
|How would *you* most like to control your CNC device from your PC?
|
|Mariss, I take it you are using the rabbit core (it has an ethernet port);
|do you intend to have an IP based control of your new board? Or something
|else?
|
|Thoughts?
