Hi Mike,
I think some of these questions have been answered in some overnight
threads, but....
We sell them at GBP99.00 which is approx US$140 to 145 each net.
Agreed, the part cost for a home brew 3 x L298 system would be
roughly what you say (even in the UK). The G201 is in a different
league to this, but if Mariss came along with the power stage it
could open a whole new world for the home build guys..... no ritual
silicon cremation ;-)

Yes, you can run the L298 at 2.5A. ST recommend an 80% duty cyle
though. To get close to this you can use a standby current circuit,
run the drive at only 24/30V and fit each L298 with (very cheap)
486/586 uP heatsink/fans. L298 has a 3 degree C per Watt junc/case
so bolt the L298 straight to the heatsink with just "white" h/s
compound.
