Lee,

Thank you for starting this thread. Safety is unfortunately often
overlooked in "homemade" projects. Whether it is due to lack of
imformation, cost-cutting, or thoughts of saving time, or it-won't-
ever-be-a-problem thinking; the result will be the same if these
choices/assumptions are incorrect...

It is interesting that the first few replies to your request for
safety information basically say "don't worry about it"... And there
ARE safety standards which result in the computer power supply being
in its own housing, as well as having metal plates obver "live" line
voltage... (not just economic considerations)

I try to post whenever I see something which violates basic safety
issues; and others do also. Safety isn't "sexy", and it
doesn't "sizzle" (In sales, it is well known that safety generally
doesn't sell; Volvo notwithstanding). But all you need is to see the
results AFTER an accident that "could have" been prevented, to WISH
that this was considered at the outset. Don't we all know this from
relatively recent world events?

I commend your efforts to learn what safety means in all this CNC
stuff, and suggest you take a trip to a state library and look for
the standards related to machine tools, control systems, etc. The CFR
(Code of Federal Regulations) has many of these; and underwriters and
ISO will have others. Some are quite hard to find; most are very
expensive, but many are available at a GOOD library. Most likely this
will not be "local" community library. University and state libraries
will usually be much better.

Besides this, specific questions are most easily answered. What
besides power supply inside a control box, did you wish information
on?

Hope this helps,

Ballendo

P.S. I too am frustrated by the over-sensitivity to safety in our
modern society. Many things I did as a kid are now "against" safety
rules... I still believe personal responsibility is the BEST safety;
but anytime others are involved, you have to account for THEIR level
of personal responsibility, which may or may not match your own...
(As in your excellent example of the neigbor kid checking out your
cnc project)
