Dave,
I meant it all in fun. I have pretty much given up on worrying about
the catastrophy de jour. Life is way to short and should be enjoyed
rather than feared. So much of the stuff that is out there sucks the
sheer pleasure out of existance, and frankly I feel it makes no
difference in the long run except to make you fearful. Life is fuller
and lusher than that, it is meant to be enjoyed like a beautiful
woman, with all your senses alive and alert.
I was wrong about aluminum. The metal that is orders of magnitude
more plentiful on the surface of the earth is hydrogen, primarily
locked up in water and salts. Most probably people don't realize
hydrogen is a metal. Hydrogen embrittles steel. It forms a metal
alloy with it. Hydrogen takes the place of a metal ion in molecules
like hydrogen nitrate (nitric acid), hydrogen cloride (hydrochloric
acid), etc. Under sufficient pressure (enourmous by the way), it
reveals its true nature by becoming metallic in every sense of the
word. Interstingly Jupiter is metallic hydrogen for two thirds of its
radius according to the latest findings.
