I think I solved the problem. On my enco 8X36 I found the yoke was loose
whcih was why the original acme seemed so loose.
What i did was tighten up all the bolts. Next I removed the bronze acme
drive nuts. I measured them and then made a replacement that would fit back
into the yoke on one side and was tapped for my ballscrew drive nut on the
left side.
I did this for both the X and Y axis. Seems to have held up quite nicely but
every now and then if I run into a stop then I have to retighten the nut
into the replacement drive block.
But there could still be a problem with the overall lengths of the
ballscrews and the shoulders butting against the thrust collars.
