Turning down in the lathe is not bad. You will need a carbide tool.
The surface is pretty hard but once passed it it turns great.
Make sure you use double angular conatact bearings to remove any
slop at one end of the ballscrew. The other end bearing is then not
important.
I did buy them direct from Nook. You can get the Thompson Saginaw
ballscrews and nuts as well. They are good products also.
Like I mentioned I choose Nook because they had the left hand
ballscrew that I ended up really not needing. I have no plans on
putting the handles on the mill at all.
