If you want a USB breakout board the SmoothStepper is better supported
<http://www.warp9td.com/>
I would strongly recommend not using the original steppers. I had no end
of problems until I junked mine. Fit servos or modern size 32 steppers,
around 1000oz-in. You can't re-use much of the original BOSS5
electronics but you can use the large mains transformer. In the power
cabinet there is a large 110V transformer. It has tappings for a wide
variety of supply voltages. For the drives you need around 45 - 55V but
if you rewire the transformer you can drop it's output voltage. For
instance I have 240V mains so I used the 480V tapping. This halved the
output giving me 55V.
In the computer/drive cabinet there is a row of large electrolytic
capacitors. These can be re-used for the power supply. You can also
salvage a bunch of bridge rectifiers for the power supply. The rest
unfortunately is junk. When I converted mine I scrapped the computer
cabinet then moved the power cabinet around to the right hand side. It
fits quite easily if you turn it's top mounting bracket over. All of my
electronics fit in this cabinet. I also transferred the pivoting arm
onto the power cabinet. The arm now holds the monitor, keyboard and some
switches.
