The Pico Systems PPMC can easily do 5 KHz on a 4-axis system, and can
probably do
10 KHz with higher-end PC hardware. If the servo amps in his machine
are OK, there
is no need to change them. Copley Controls and AMC servo amps can be
found on
eBay or a regular basis. (I just got some current model Copley
brushless amps for
about $50 each.)

My (Pico Systems) PWM servo amps can deliver 2 KW, and are only $125 per
axis, if his servo amps are not in good condition.
