You are probably correct, it might even be either analog or a full
hardware implementation (I don't know!)

The point was that EMC2 is an inexpensive as a way to find out.

Higher performance products (like the Mesa Electronics
<http://www.mesanet.com/> stuff) has 20 KHz sample rates and 2 MHz
encoder count rates. The servo amps can be 2 KW each (dual channel
cards), of course, these come at much higher cost (like $2,000 for a set
plus the PC and FPGA coding.) Of course, 2KW/motor should be plenty
(2.5 HP roughly) for excessive speeds...
