Most radiant floor systems use an "engineered plastic" tube for
better life and reliability. Radiant floors can also be added to WOOD
floors. Fine Homebuilding magazine (Taunton Press) had an article
about just this subject in a very recent issue! (current or last
month, IIRC).

While on the subject of wood floors, sometimes adding 2x2 'sleepers'
over the concrete and 1-1/8 ply sub floor can make a HUGE difference
in the comfort level of a workshop. Be careful the 3 inches lost in
height doesn't create problems... Also, be sure you are solid under
heavy tools...
