I too have a VFD to drive the spindle motor on my mill. On an old Bridgeport I
had, I had to chop into the crown of the windings to convert it to delta - Not
recommended for the faint hearted.

Other advantages of a VFD are full motor overload protection, and no nasty dip
in the mains when you switch on.
