I am using a 2.2kW invertor to convert from 240V single phase to 240V
3-phase. Gives me variable speed and other 'goodies' like acceleration and
decceleration, remote control, etc.

Disadvantages are that you have to be able to connect the motors for delta
instead of star and this is not always possible, or easy to achieve, on
older motors.

An alternative is to use a static convertor with a pilot motor to give you
an approximation to 414V 3-phase.

Disadvantages are that you might not be able to get certain types of motor
to start or run properly. Pole-changeing multi-speed motors will almost
certainly not be happy, particularly if they are permanently connected to a
gearbox.
