Having covered this on another list some while ago it appears that US
motors are wound totally different to UK and European motors.
The UK ones have 3 coils and 6 leads so you can get 440v star or 240v
delta.
US motors have many more coils, up to 6 and can be configured many ways.
These often have 9 leads coming out and 3 buried.
