In the UK you can get 3-phase - it comes down the street as 415V 50Hz
3-phase, but normally only one of the three phases and the neutral is taken
into each house to give the standard 240V supply. This means that I am on,
say the Red phase, my neighbour up the road is on the Blue phase while my
neighbour down the road is on the Yellow phase.
To get the 3-phases into my workshop would cost me an arm and a leg - even
if I dig the trench the electricity company will sting me with their very
high standard charge.
By the way, I now buy my electricity from the gas company and my gas from
the electricity company! Saves me a lot of money each year.
