Yes, a major task here in the States. Homes here are supplied with 240V
single phase, center tapped (perhaps that's not the correct term - I'm a
gearhead).

I attempted to get 3ph to my house in New York about ten years ago. It was
on the pole and the power company was willing to set me up. However, 3ph
customers have to pay a demand charge that is based on the maximum current
draw in any five second period. This varies from one community to the next
but the result for me would have been an additional $325 a month just for
the priveledge of having a 400 amp tig welder.

Of course 3ph would have also been a tip-off that I was running a
manufacturing business in a residential area and I had some unfriendly
neighbors already. I bought a rotary converter and have been happy with it.
Works fine with two speed motors.
