Just out of curiosity, and not specifically about this thread.

I've read a couple of threads on the list about 3 phase converters, rotary,
VFD and otherwise...

I am blessed with 3 phase 240V 50hz power where I am, as is anyone in New
Zealand who wants it, or has a big enough house to warrant 3 phase to feed
all of the lights etc. I don't currently have any 3 phase gear, appart from
a Spa pool, but the option is there if I ever decide to buy a real machine
:-).

There is no difference to the per unit power price, and we pay $3.90 per
phase monthly maintenance for lines etc.

Is it a major task to get 3 phase in some other parts of the world where
people are posting from?

Or do people just not bother asking the power company how hard it is?

I would have thought it would be just a phone call, and a few hundred
dollars as it is here. Upgrading to 3 phase in a town here costs in the
order of $600 NZD one off, plus the line charges, which vary between
utilities, but I believe the $3.90 I pay is on the high side due to our
rural location, and we've got the only buried 3 phase feed in our area due
to a 150m long drive, and not wanting power poles along it.
