Cor, What do you do if you want to heat and light a large house? Run a
massive single phase feed? with only 110V to go on, you'd get some pretty
high current feeds to larger homes I imagine!

Come to think of it, how do you run a decent spa pool? When the Spa is on
full noise with both pumps going it pulls 7A per phase, which is 5kW or
there abouts. With 110V single phase you'd need to pull 45A from the single
phase? That's a heavy feeder wire to the house....

Here in NZ, it is common, although not universally standard, to have 3 phase
everywhere, all of the street mains is 3 phase, and every third house gets
the same phase.

We have zoning restrictions etc here as well, although not as draconian
sounding as yours... The "home business" scenario is pretty much open
slather unless you have excessive traffic, noise or discharge (light, sound,
vibration, smoke, any type). Our government virtually encourages small
"Cottage" businesses.
