You are quite correct, you do NOT get true closed loop control with the
conversion boards or the Gecko drives as you are still using the step and
direction signals and there is no feedback to the software itself to tell it
if the spindle, etc. is "in position" or has a following error. But, at
least you can have the conversion boards send an error signal back and do a
feedhold, that at least give some amount of feedback from the encoders that
is useful.

Otherwise, you need a true closed loop controller that can accept the input
pulses from the encoders and process them to have a true closed loop system.
