Small DOPerspective here. Most folk do use a, b, c, for rotary around x,
y, z.

in the EMC, the ini file allows you to specify whatever config you
want, linear or angular for any of the six. I suppose that you could
call axis #3-5 whatever you wanted -- z1 z2 z3 -- but a,b,c are the
RS274NGC words that would currently be recognized in the part program. The
interpreter doesn't care how you use them.

If you squirrel up the physical arrangement from cartesian and expect to do
any contouring, you also have to do some work on the kinematics so that the
motion stuff knows how to relate to the program.
